Civil Disobedience or Police Brutality?

After watching several clips, from the ones shown in class, and some I have found on my own searching through YouTube, the question remains unanswered to me... are the protestors resisting authority or are the police acting on their own mindset and impulse from the chaotic rage represented in several cities all over the country resulting in aggressive behavior. Especially after watching this video and O'Donnell's interpretation of it, the police are taking advantage of their authority and penalizing the protestors for exhibiting their amendment rights to freedom of speech.

  1. After watching that, it still shocks me that there hasnt been a public apology or anything. I would think that given the intense emotions brewing in these Occupations that a public apology might calm people down, not as a pacifier but an act of decency to the people these policemen/women were sworn to protect.
That is a powerful recap of the unnecessary brutality.

  2. That's a great example of power relations...unfortunately.

I just saw a compelling image about the first arrests that were made on the Brooklyn Bridge and was astounded by how quickly the media altered reality. It really says something to the concept that the what we are taught is often not true.

Also, as of tonight there have been arrests at OccupyAustin. It will be interesting to see how the media portrays these demonstrators as a threat.

  3. wow its really scary to think that anyone of those people could be me. Its horrible that these people are being assaulted by the police just for expressing their rights and beliefs. what happened to freedom of speech? None of those people were getting out of hand in any way. The video in class also was also surprising. That girl seemed like she was being thrown around like a rag doll.

Here is a link where police said they didnt use excessive force and when proven wrong they just change their story to say the "may" have used "less than lethal" force.
